El Mezcal
El Mezcal is a great place to eat with a group of friends or your teammates after a game. The environment is very friendly, which also means that it is quite noisy, especially during their peak hours. Also, it is very affordable. When I visited, the service was exceptionally good. We got our food in less than ten minutes! The waiter was very nice as they normally are.
Entrées
Chimichanga
I had never had a chimichanga before this day. I had seen it on the menu, but I was never brave enough to order it. I decided to order a chicken chimichanga, and they asked if I wanted shredded or grilled chicken. I chose grilled chicken…wrong choice. This chimichanga was super bland and not at all what I expected.
Soft Chicken Tacos
I also ordered soft chicken tacos, and I expected them to be pretty basic. They were. The tacos came with shredded chicken, cheese, and lettuce. There wasn’t much to it. They weren’t amazing, but they also weren’t horrible.
Pollo Asado
My mom’s favorite dish is pollo asado, so I decided to give it a try. This dish is a grilled chicken breast with sautéed onions, and it is topped with pico. It is served on a iron skillet with a side of tortillas. I really enjoyed this dish because it is like fajitas without peppers.
Arroz con Pollo
This is my all-time favorite dish here. It is a bed of rice topped with small grilled chicken strips and queso. It is also served with tortillas. I normally don’t use the tortillas because it is just as good without them! I love the mixture of chicken, cheese, and rice together.
Quesadilla
I ordered a cheese quesadilla, and it wasn’t my favorite thing. It was really greasy and thin. It had one type of cheese. It is definitely not their best dish, but I think kids would really enjoy it.
Mezcal Quesadilla
I would say that the Mezcal quesadilla is the step up from the cheese quesadilla. I chose to get chicken instead of steak, and it comes with onions, pepper, and cheese sauce. This entrée is actually really good, and I would order this if I was really hungry because it is a big portion.
Burrito
I decided to also order a regular beef burrito since I was trying other average Mexican food items like tacos and quesadillas. When the burrito came out, it did not look very appetizing. I am not a fan of salsa, and it came topped with salsa even though I asked to not have it. I decided to try a bite for the sake of the blog, and it tasted as expected. It was just beef with cheese in a flour tortilla topped with salsa. I’m sure that some of their other fancier burritos are a lot better, so I would try a different one (maybe chicken if you are craving it).
Sides
Rice
They serve Spanish rice on the side of most of their entrées. The rice is pretty fluffy, and it is not spicy, which is why I like it. Honestly, it tastes like almost every other side of rice you order at a Mexican restaurant in Memphis.
Beans
The beans they served are refried. Like the rice, they taste just like every other type of refried beans. As far as I know, this is the only type of beans they have.
Chips and Salsa
Immediately after being seated at your table, the waiter/waitress brings you chips and salsa. When I went, the chips were cold, which was very surprising. This is the first time that I have ever had bad chips there. Normally, they are very crunchy and salty, which mixes well with salsa. The salsa is mild to medium heat. It honestly differs each time depending on who makes it, but it typically is a manageable amount of heat. Sorry to you, spice lovers!
Queso
The queso here is white cheese, my favorite! It is creamy with a mild level of heat. I love the queso here, and every time, I eat so much queso that I am practically full by the time I eat!
